The car parts depots in the Israeli-Gaza Strip have long been the most lucrative source of employment for Israeli military personnel.
Now, after nearly three years of war, they are increasingly seen as the most important economic source of revenue for Israel’s government, as well as for the Israeli economy.
While the war has destroyed much of the auto parts market, the depots are still functioning, supplying the military with spare parts and parts for its army.
In recent years, the number of Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip has doubled, and many of them have gone to repair and refurbish their own cars.
But as the Israeli military prepares to withdraw its troops from the Gaza strip, the auto repair shops are in a precarious position.
In a report published last month, the Jerusalem-based Al Jazeera English Foundation, which tracks violence in the Middle East, noted that the main source of funding for Israeli armed forces in Gaza has become the auto sales depot, which operates for less than a dollar a day.
The report quoted a former military intelligence officer who said that the Israeli Defense Force’s main business source is the auto maintenance and repair service.
The report quoted the former officer as saying that the auto dealer has been “frequently the first place to get killed” during Israel’s 2014 war with Hamas, when over 1,000 Palestinians were killed, and a similar number wounded.
“They were always killed at the auto-parts depot,” the officer told Al Jazeera.
“The depot was the first casualty.
And they [Israelis] just don’t trust us anymore.”
In the years following the war, the Israel Defense Forces established a large presence in the auto repairs depot.
The military says the new military vehicle fleet will replace the outdated fleet of military trucks.
But the report also noted that many Israelis who work in the repair industry have been displaced from their homes, and that many people in the industry are already living with the fear that their businesses will be destroyed by the military’s decision to withdraw.
“There are a lot of people who have left, and some are already homeless,” the former military officer told the Al Jazeera report.
“But the problem is that if you look at the number, most of them don’t have jobs anymore.”
The military has said that it will allow private companies to repair or refurbish vehicles at the new auto repair depots, but has not yet said when it will do so.
